Plant-based drug reduces symptoms in functional diarrhoea patients

Digestive Health Day

This World Digestive Health Day, Napo Pharmaceuticals has announced positive results of a third-party, investigator-initiated study of crofelemer, Napo’s novel plant-based prescription drug.

The study results show that twice daily oral administration of crofelemer led to a statistically meaningful reduction of abdominal pain and discomfort and improved stool consistency in functional diarrhoea patients when compared to placebo.

Functional diarrhoea, defined as chronic diarrhoea for more than six months, is a common diagnosis without effective treatments. It is a functional gastrointestinal disorder, meaning that it occurs without any other known signs of disease, injury, or structural problem.

A global survey by the Rome Foundation of 73,000 adults in 33 countries found that functional diarrhoea had a prevalence of 4.7%.

Crofelemer is a novel, oral plant-based medicine purified from the red bark sap, also referred to as ‘dragon’s blood’, of the medicinal Croton lechleri tree in the Amazon Rainforest.

Napo has established a sustainable harvesting program, under fair trade practices, for crofelemer, to ensure a high degree of quality, ecological integrity, and support for indigenous communities.

In January 2024, a study in dogs showed that crofelemer can provide symptomatic relief of diarrhoeaassociated with the irreversible pan-human epidermal growth factor receptor (HER) tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) neratinib (Nerlynx).

World Digestive Health Day

World Digestive Health Day is celebrated every year on 29 May. It marks the start of a 12-month long campaign focusing on raising public and professional awareness of a particular digestive disease or disorder. This year’s WDHD theme is ‘Your Digestive Health: Make It A Priority’.

The awareness day was launched in 2004 to recognise the 45th anniversary of the creation of the World Gastroenterology Organisation. The organisation has over 100 member societies and 50,000 individual members all over the world.

Napo Pharmaceuticals is part of the Jaguar Health family of companies.
