Two wins for vaccine company at Scotland’s Life Sciences Awards

Valneva Scotland scooped two prizes at Scotland’s Life Sciences Awards 2024, including the award for Innovation – Pharma Services And Drug Discovery, in a ceremony on 14 March in Glasgow.

Valneva Scotland is focused on vaccines for infectious diseases with significant unmet medical needs.

The company’s vaccine for Chikungunya virus (IXCHIQ) was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in November 2023 and is the world’s first and only vaccine for Chikungunya.

Valneva also received the Outstanding Skills Development Award. To achieve a stronger, people-led culture, the company launched a unique five-year People Plan and their ‘Together We’ cultural transformation campaign in February 2023.

The Rising Stars: Extraordinary Talent Award was won by Professor Craig Ritchie, who resigned from the University of Edinburgh to launch Scottish Brain Sciences (SBS), which aims to help provide better access to life changing Alzheimer’s medicines through clinical trials.

Alison Culpan, Director of ABPI Scotland, was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award, presented by Dame Anna Dominiczak. She said: “Alison’s career is a testament to her pioneering influence in the pharmaceutical sector, with a strong focus on promoting life sciences and a huge focus on promoting Scotland! Alison broke new ground for gender equality within the pharma industry as the first female leader in Scotland (first for the ICI and then GSK) and trailblazer UK- wide.”

In a speech to open the awards, Neil Gray, Cabinet Secretary for NHS Recovery, Health and Social Care, said: “With £10.5 billion of contribution to the Scottish economy, the success of the life sciences sector is phenomenal. By continuing to push boundaries, the life sciences sector is capable of shaping a brighter future for healthcare, both in Scotland and beyond.”
