The European Commission (EC) has approved a higher dosage of obesity drug Wegovy which has proved it can help adults lose weight more effectively.

Final approval has been granted to a new 7.2mg once-weekly maintenance dose of Wegovy (semaglutide injection), giving doctors another treatment option alongside the previous 2.4mg dose.

Novo Nordisk has applied for approval of a 7.2mg single-dose pen in the European Union (EU) and, if approved, it could be available this year. This means that, in the EU, adults with obesity may now step directly from Wegovy 2.4mg up to 7.2mg if they need greater weight loss, while preserving muscle function.

The approval from the EC is based on a positive opinion from the European Medicines Agency’s scientific committee (CHMP) on 12 December 2025. The opinion follows two clinical studies showing adults with obesity who took the 7.2mg dose of Wegovy, alongside undergoing lifestyle changes, lost considerably more weight than people on placebo.

On average, participants with obesity and without diabetes saw 21% body weight loss on the 7.2mg dosage compared to 2% in the placebo group. One in three people lost 25% or more body weight, with body composition improving in 84% of participants and tests showing preserved muscle functioning.

“This approval is another important step in helping people living with obesity reach very significant weight loss,” said Emil Kongshøj Larsen, Executive Vice President, International Operations, Novo Nordisk.

“The new dose gives healthcare professionals even more flexibility to tailor treatment and help people with obesity achieve their weight loss and health goals.”
