SCIEX celebrates 50 years of innovation with advanced technology launch

SCIEX has celebrated its 50th anniversary with a digital product launch. SCIEX virtual product experience introduced products that enable customers to Run Fast, Go Beyond and Power Up.

“Half a century ago, SCIEX set out with a mission to develop analytical technologies for aerospace. Today, our technologies cover analysis of environmental hazards, biomarkers discovery, clinical diagnostics, drug development, food safety and more,” said Inese Lowenstein, President of SCIEX. 

“Our 20K install base spans innovative labs and companies around the world. I am incredibly proud of the progress SCIEX has achieved and look forward to continued innovation in the next 50 years.”

Since 1970, the portfolio has grown through development and acquisitions, transitioning through the years from MDS SCIEX to Applied Biosystems to AB Sciex to SCIEX. Along the way, key integrations such as capillary electrophoresis from Beckman Life Sciences, have also strengthened the portfolio.

The Run Fast, Go Beyond and Power Up experience was the celebration of 50 years of progress as well as the answer to urgent needs voiced by customers, says SCIEX. The challenging environment posed by the last few months has amplified these needs and the company has responded with the launch of new products when customers need them most.

Lieve Dillen, Senior Principal Scientist for Assay Development and Analytical Support within the Development Bioanalysis group of Janssen R&D in Belgium, said: “One of the critical aspects for me is sensitivity. Within our department, the most challenging applications – independent of the analyte – almost all require increased sensitivity. Often, intrinsic sensitivity is compromised by carryover and/or contamination.”

Shane Needham, Co-Founder at Alturas Analytics: “The next 10 years I see that we are going to have an improvement in sensitivity and that will improve our efficiency and productivity. We are definitely going to see more large molecule bioanalysis to support gene therapy programs with LC-MS.”

The SCIEX Triple Quad 7500 LC-MS/MS System – QTRAP Ready mass spectrometer, was part of the launch. It aims to deliver the highest level of sensitivity in the SCIEX portfolio and enables customers to go beyond previous limits.

“The 7500 System is going to absolutely improve the productivity and efficiency in the laboratory. What I am happily surprised and shocked about is usually we see incremental improvements. 20 years ago it was easy to gain an order of magnitude in sensitivity but that has not been the case over the last 10 years. Now with this new 7500 System, we have gone to another level of sensitivity. SCIEX has again set the bar for sensitivity,” said Needham.

Key features of the SCIEX 7500 System include:

  • Simplified workflows with a linear dynamic range of up to six orders of magnitude, surpassing existing sensitivity parameters to quantify at lower levels with precision;
  • A new D Jet Ion guide allows users to characterise analytes that were once previously undetectable. The unique design also captures more ions from the spray plume;
  • A new OptiFlow Pro Ion Source improves productivity and reduces the need for extensive sample preparation, allowing users to quantify more trace analytes at lower levels. 

“The significant impact of faster and more sensitive instruments is twofold, you can more reliably get lower results in quantification, and you can combine several runs. Less analysis time means less costs for labs,” says Wim Broer, Manager of Science and Development at Nofalab.

SCIEX OS software is now available on the Echo MS System and the SCIEX Triple Quad 7500 LC-MS/MS System – QTRAP Ready.

With an intuitive and user-friendly design. Key features include:

  • Usability; 
  • Auto-detection of sample failures results in auto-corrective action;
  • Efficiency – results are optimised with powerful integration algorithms;
  • Peak modelling improves peak finding and integration, requiring less user input and therefore reduces time for data review;

“Software at times is equally if not more important than the instrument itself. In situations where the amount of samples analysed is key, having complex software that bottlenecks the operation is not ideal,” said Wim Broer, Manager of Science and Development at Nofalab. “The new SCIEX OS Software, specifically on the 7500 System has seen significant improvements. The organisation is better and it’s easier to set up methods.”
