Insilico advances virtual cell research
Insilico Medicine has introduced biological age as a core condition in virtual cell research with the launch of its Virtual Aging Cell (VAC) Webpage and a preview of its Multi-Agent driven VAC platform.
The clinical-stage drug discovery company said the platform represents the industry’s first multi-agent Virtual Aging Cell platform with biological age as a core condition.
Virtual cells use AI and mathematical modelling to simulate cellular biology and can support drug response prediction, disease mechanism research and target discovery. However, most existing models capture cells as static snapshots, limiting their ability to simulate dynamic processes such as differentiation, reprogramming and ageing.
VAC is built around biological age as a core conditional variable and uses a multi-agent AI architecture across six biological scales: molecular, intracellular, intercellular, tissue, organ, and organism/population. It aims to dynamically simulate cellular differentiation, reprogramming and aging, supporting target identification, cellular fate intervention, novel drug discovery and geroscience research.
“Every computational model needs a first principle, and ours is biological age,” said Dr Alex Zhavoronkov, Founder, Co-CEO, and Chief Business Officer of Insilico Medicine.
Insilico’s work in virtual cells and geroscience spans a decade, beginning with its 2014 vision for computational virtual cells, virtual organs and digital populations. This was followed by Embryonic.AI with BioTime and, later, the “PreciousGPT” series, which expanded the company’s work in aging biology and multi-omics modelling.
The VAC platform uses a Multi-Agent Swarms architecture based on three core dimensions: biological time as a core condition, six-scale agent swarm collaboration, and a move from state observation to fate intervention. It is designed to simulate interventions including drug-target inhibition, gene knockout and environmental stimuli.
“What distinguishes VAC is not the number of hierarchical levels or agents, but the combination of bidirectional Master Agent coordination and first-class organism context storage,” said Dr Vladimir Naumov, Head of TargetID of Insilico Medicine.
Insilico said VAC moves from single-omics “snapshot” characterisation to dynamic biological system simulation spanning health and disease states, providing a digital testing environment for target identification, cell reprogramming protocol design and anti-ageing drug evaluation.
The company has also released an initial VAC demo video and plans to continue development discussions at ARDD 2026 in Boston. Insilico shared that it has nominated 33 PCCs since 2021, with 13 receiving IND approvals or clearances, while nine DC nominations have been announced since the beginning of 2026.
