QIAgenes Expression Kits
Available for Mammalian and Insect Cells
Sept 08
With the expansion of QIAgenes Expression Kits to include expression constructs that can be transfected into insect or mammalian cells, we are addressing a significant unmet customer need
QIAgenes Expression Kits, the first set of ready-cloned plasmids with synthetic genes covering the entire human genome is now available for use in insect or mammalian cells. With these new kits, QIAGEN and its partner GENEART are responding to researchers desire for an alternative to protein production using E. coli cells.
“With the expansion of QIAgenes Expression Kits to include expression constructs that can be transfected into insect or mammalian cells, we are addressing a significant unmet customer need,” says Dr. Ute Boronowsky, Global Product Manager at QIAGEN. “Since the launch of our expression kits for use in E. coli cells in May, we have received a high number of requests for these two additional options. Customer service is a core commitment of QIAGEN and GENEART, and we are proud that we have been able to respond to this need so quickly.”
QIAgenes are available through the company’s Web portal “GeneGlobe,” the only database on the market that includes all protein-coding genes. Customers simply choose the gene/protein of interest and order the corresponding plasmid. QIAgenes Expression Kits use synthetic complementary DNA (cDNA) with a human genome sequence optimized for expression in E. coli, insect or mammalian cells. This optimized sequence increases protein yields as much as 50-fold and produces expression success rates as high as 90 percent.
"Low success rates together with limited yields in recombinant protein expression have always been a major challenge for scientists," says Prof. Dr. Ralf Wagner, CEO of GENEART. "With GENEART´s proprietary GeneOptimizer® and GeneAssembler® technology we are able to overcome this bottleneck by generating and synthesizing optimized gene sequences for best expression results.”
QIAgenes Expression Kits include ready-to-go vectors, but also are flexible enough to express only parts of a gene, or to use N-terminal His-tag if needed. In addition, they are compatible with QIAGEN protein kits, including all Ni-NTA products for His-tag-based purification.

About QIAGEN:
QIAGEN N.V., a Netherlands holding company, is the leading global provider of sample and assay technologies. Sample technologies are used to isolate and process DNA, RNA and proteins from biological samples such as blood or tissue. Assay technologies are used to make such isolated biomolecules visible. QIAGEN has developed and markets more than 500 consumable products as well as automated systems for performing a variety of functions. The company provides its products to molecular diagnostics laboratories, academic researchers, pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, and applied testing customers for purposes such as forensics, animal or food testing and pharmaceutical process control. QIAGEN's assay technologies include one of the broadest panels of molecular diagnostic tests available worldwide. This panel includes the only FDA-approved test for human papillomavirus (HPV), the primary cause of cervical cancer. QIAGEN employs more than 2,800 people in over 30 locations worldwide. Further information about QIAGEN can be found at www.qiagen.com.
About GENEART AG:
In 2000, GENEART entered the gene synthesis market and has since become the global market leader. Today, the company is one of the leading specialists in the Synthetic Biology field. Experts at GENEART provide key technologies for the development and production of new therapeutics and vaccines. Customers also take advantage of GENEART services to customize enzyme attributes, such as the attributes of enzymes used as detergent additives, and to construct bacteria, which produce complex biopolymers or break down polymers, such as synthetics, petroleum components, etc. Our production and service spectrum spans a wide range, from the production of synthetic genes according to DIN EN ISO 9001-2000, to the creation of gene libraries in the combinatorial biology, to the development and production of DNA-based biologically active substances. The GENEART AG in Regensburg (Germany) and the subsidiary GENEART Inc. in Toronto (Canada) employ more than 190 people. Since May 2006, GENEART is listed on the German Stock Exchange.
